Jenson Button says McLaren 'messed up' in US Grand Prix qualifying

Jenson Button says his McLaren Formula 1 team "messed up" in qualifying for the US Grand Prix, which resulted in his elimination in Q1.
Button will start the race 19th after he caught traffic on his final lap, which he believes was because McLaren got its timing wrong.
"We were eighth yesterday and ninth this morning, so the pace was good," said Button.
"But we just messed up with the timing again - it's not the first time.
"I had to overtake four cars in the last sector and the last one [Jolyon Palmer] saw me really late and stayed on the racing line, so I had to outbrake him into the final corner.
"It's disappointing and it's just certain things that we shouldn't have been making mistakes with.
"We mistimed the lap and got it wrong and it's annoying because we did it two races ago in Malaysia as well.
"It means I'm doing my timed lap when other people are doing their outlap, so we've got to stop doing that because it's costing us a lot.
"You could say 'well how do you know when the pack is going out?' but the other cars seem to be able to do that.
"I thought we had good pace here and we've thrown it away - it's our fault for getting the strategy wrong in terms of timing."
Button attempted his first run in qualifying on the soft tyre, before joining everyone else in taking the super-soft for his final lap, and he admitted that initial strategy gamble was "probably not a good idea".
"We thought we had enough in the bag, with the pace the car had, but it was a tough lap," he added.
"If we judged it right at the end like most of the other cars did, we would have been fine
"Our race pace is fine but the problem is you can't overtake around here, so it's going to be a tough one tomorrow."

JENSON BUTTON: “I HOPE WE CAN HAVE A SOLID WEEKEND”

With the Spa-Francorchamps being one of Jenson Button's favourite circuits, he is excited to see what McLaren-Honda can do this weekend when Formula 1 returns.

Credit: Octane Photographic Ltd.
Jenson Button hopes McLaren-Honda can have a smooth Grand Prix, when Formula 1 returns to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this weekend.
The McLaren driver was able to achieve some much needed points before the three-week break in Germany, after he finished in eighth ahead of the Williams Martini Racing of Valtteri Bottas. The Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring was not McLaren’s strongest race but Button was still able to secure four valuable points.
The Belgian circuit is one of the longest circuits on the calendar, and teams and drivers are working hard to manage all the different aspects of the car, and as one of the Briton’s favourite circuits he is excited to see what McLaren can do this weekend.
“I love Spa! Eau Rouge is one of those fabled corners that drivers and fans always talk about – but it really is that special,”said Button. “As well as being the longest circuit on the calendar, it also has an average speed of 230km/h (143mph), so it’s pretty quick!
“That means it’s pretty brutal on the cars – you’re at full throttle for almost three-quarters of the lap – so all the team and drivers will be working hard to manage all the different aspects of the car and react quickly to anything that crops up during the race.
“The important thing, as always, is reliability, and because of the nature of the Spa circuit it tends to be a race of attrition. The guys and girls back at MTC and also in Sakura are working hard to keep pushing the limits of our package, and I hope we can enjoy a smooth race from that point of view.
“I’ve always loved Spa right from the early days of my career – it still feels mega with every lap you do and never fails to put a smile on my face. It’s easily one of the best circuits on the calendar and definitely one of my favourites, so let’s see what we can do – I hope we can have a solid weekend.”

Will Jenson Button be fast-tracked into Chris Evans' Top Gear team?

He apparently tops 'wish list' of potential presenters.
Is Jenson Button about to be fast-tracked into the presenting team on Top Gear?
The Sunday Mirror reports that Button is apparently set to join Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc on the rebooted show.
The former Formula 1 world champion is allegedly ready to commit to the series if there's a slot for him, and he is at the top of a 'wish list' of potential presenters to lift Top Gear after its highly publicised ratings drop.
Digital Spy has reached out to the BBC for comment.
Chris Evans on Top Gear
Button has been on Top Gear three times before, with his most recent appearance being last Sunday's (June 5) episode.
Earlier this year, Evans revealed that the F1 driver was "so close" to being a host on this series of Top Gear.
Last week, the host said he reckons "hundreds of millions" will eventually watch the show, despite ratings being down after just two weeks.

Top Gear continues tonight (June 12) at 8pm on BBC Two.

Jenson Button accuses Red Bull of short memories over Daniil Kvyat demotion

Daniil Kvyat
Jenson Button has accused Red Bull of having short memories after dropping Daniil Kvyat and replacing him with Max Verstappen for the remainder of the season.
Kvyat has been punished by the Red Bull hierarchy for his display at the Russian Grand Prix – when he crashed into Sebastian Vettel on two occasions on the opening lap – and have relegated him to Toro Rosso, their junior team, with immediate effect.
Their decision means Verstappen, the 18-year-old Dutchman who passed his driving test only last year, has earned a surprising promotion to Red Bull where he will partner Daniel Ricciardo.
Red Bull have taken swift action following Kvyat’s erratic first-lap display in Sochi, but Button, dropped by Williams after his debut season in the sport back in 2000, and then again by Renault two years later, has sympathy for the 22-year-old Russian.
Reflecting on the decision to demote Kvyat, who finished third at the Chinese Grand Prix last month, Button tweeted: “Really? One bad race and Kyvat’s dropped, what about the podium in the previous race? #Shortmemories.”
In response to one Twitter user who said they “could not wait to see Max up against an established star in Ricciardo”, Button replied: “Agreed and I respect his talent but he’s got time on his hands.”
Button then retweeted a post from Martin Brundle in which the former McLaren driver-turned-pundit, said: “In true F1 soap opera style I hope Kvyat really flies now in TR [Toro Rosso]!”
Verstappen’s impressive displays, since he made his debut last year as the sport’s youngest ever driver, have courted the attention of Mercedes and Ferrari. With Kimi Raikkonen out of contract at the end of the season, his promotion to the Red Bull team could be seen as a move to block any approach from the fabled Italian constructor.
“Max has proven to be an outstanding young talent,” said the Red Bull principal Christian Horner. “His performance at Toro Rosso has been impressive so far and we are pleased to give him the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing.
“We are in the unique position to have all four drivers across Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso under long-term contracts with Red Bull, so we have the flexibility to move them between the two teams.
“Dany will be able to continue his development at Toro Rosso, in a team that he is familiar with, giving him the chance to regain his form and show his potential.”
Reacting to his promotion to the senior team, Verstappen, who was at Red Bull’s Milton Keynes headquarters on Thursday, said: “The next step in my relatively short career so far, is an amazing opportunity. I really want to thank Red Bull Racing and Dr Helmut Marko for the confidence they have in me.
“I’ll have the chance to learn a lot from the top team that is Red Bull Racing. I’m also looking forward to working with an experienced and proven team-mate like Daniel Ricciardo.”

F1: Jenson Button eyes progress ahead of Bahrain Grand Prix

jensonbutton
JENSON Button has eyed continued progress ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.
Button arrives in Sakhir looking for his first points of the season after a poor strategy call left the McLaren driver a disappointing 14th in the Australian Grand Prix.
Despite leaving Melbourne pointless, McLaren demonstrated a clear step forward from their disastrous 2015 campaign and the main issues with their Honda engine from last season - unreliability and an inability to deploy full power for lengthy periods - appear to have been fixed.
Button said: "I'm really keen to get back behind the wheel, as, although it didn't show in our results from Australia, our package felt very good to drive and the team worked really hard to bring a step forward from testing to the first race.
"Bahrain is definitely a tricky track for us as it's high-speed, but we have a solid platform and improved deployment, so there are some positives to look forward to."
Button has fond memories of Bahrain, having won there in his title-winning season of 2009, but he suffered a disastrous time at the Middle Eastern circuit last year as he failed to start the race due to mechanical problems.
It is a dilemma that Button is looking forward to avoiding this weekend.
Button added: "Bahrain is a fun track to drive on and very different from Albert Park in its configuration.
"It's tough on brakes and fuel, and good balance is key to putting together a lap, as you need downforce on the long, fast straights and then stability and traction through the lower-speed corners. It's a more extreme version of Australia in many ways, with the track starting off very dirty and rubbering in over the weekend.
"While that makes the track faster, we also have to juggle the rapidly cooling temperatures on race day after the sun sets."
